JA Alumni Chereece Burrell: Where is She Now?

Chereece 2020 High School Graduation

Chereece Burrell moved from Jamaica to the United States with her family when she was four years old. She attended Global Communications Academy in Hartford, graduating as the Valedictorian of the class of 2020. Chereece’s journey with Junior Achievement of Southwest New England began in 2017 when she participated in Career Connections for Young Women and the Entrepreneurial Academy. Chereece was a standout participant of these programs, exploring her passions and dreams as a young student while gaining essential skills and knowledge. Her hard work awarded her a Junior Achievement scholarship in 2020. Chereece’s journey led her to the University of Connecticut, where she graduated early with degrees in psychology and human development in 2022.

Chereece credits Junior Achievement of Southwest New England for the skills she gained that proved invaluable when she secured her first job. Her training with Junior Achievement in soft skills such as resume-building and interview techniques gave her the practical knowledge and competitive edge that allowed her to transition seamlessly into the workforce post-graduation. In a 2020 Q&A with Chereece, she said “the Career Connections program helped me to create my first resume. Three years later, this resume still serves as my guide for any position I apply for.”

Today, Chereece continues to embody knowledge gained in JA programming in her professional career as a Reaching Back Coach at Hartford Promise, and a Behavioral Therapist with TheraCare. Chereece is also a registered behavior technician, and works with children diagnosed with Autism and other developmental disabilities. We are so proud of Chereece, and we are honored to witness her growing positive impact on our state and world.

Chereece’s success story is just one of many among our growing network of JA alumni now thriving in the workforce. As we reflect on Chereece’s journey, we are invited to reflect our capacity to unlock and support boundless futures for Connecticut’s young students at Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.
