Yale Young Global Scholars, Junior Achievement Announce Partnership to Provide Scholarship to Rigorous Academic Summer Program
Yale Young Global Scholars and Junior Achievement of Southwest New England (JA) have established a partnership that aims to provide a full-tuition scholarship to a student who has participated in Junior Achievement in high school and is accepted to then 2017 Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS). This scholarship is need-based so students must complete the financial aid portion of the scholarship to be eligible.
YYGS is an academic enrichment and leadership training program for talented high school students from around the world who live and study on the Yale campus during the summer. The program features intensive undergraduate level coursework and interaction with renowned Yale faculty, as well as Yale undergraduate and graduate students.
The need-based Yale Young Global Scholars Junior Achievement Scholarship, for which JA-participating students are eligible, will cover the student’s tuition for the YYGS program in summer 2017. YYGS is open to students who have one or two years of secondary school remaining, and offers six different two-week sessions. A year ago, nearly half of the students were from outside the United States, representing more than 100 countries. Participants bring a wide array of perspectives into the classroom, fostering international awareness and enhancing the academic curriculum.
The scholarship marks a second-time collaboration between YYGS and JA. JA of Southwest New England President Jeremy Race said “the Yale Young Global Scholars program is an extraordinary academic experience that brings together inspiring students from across the globe. We are grateful for this partnership, and the tremendous opportunity it will provide, building on the JA commitment to empowering young people to their own economic success.”
Junior Achievement focuses on making students financially responsible, prepared for the workforce and entrepreneurially savvy. Nearly 150 schools - from kindergarten through high school - participate in JA of Southwest New England programs during the school year.
JA provides a powerful learning experience because JA programs are delivered by volunteers from business and the community, who provide positive role models and work hand-in-hand with classroom teachers. These volunteers inspire the students through their real-world experience. Nearly 40,000 students participated in JA of Southwest New England programs last year while being delivered by 2,500 volunteers.
“We understand the immeasurable benefits of teaching students the importance of personal finance and becoming business savvy at a young age. YYGS is proud to partner with Junior Achievement for this and many other reasons,” said Amy Shah, Associate Director of Student Relations and External Affairs. Our team looks forward to receiving applications from JA participants for the 2017 summer program.”
Students applying to YYGS can indicate their preference for any of six, two-week sessions, on topics that include Frontiers of Math & Science, Sustainable Development & Social Entrepreneurship, Politics, Law & Economics, Applied Science & Engineering, International Affairs & Security, Biological & Biomedical Science.
