Junior Achievement of Southwest New England Celebrates Financial Literacy in New Haven

November 12, 2018 – Junior Achievement of Southwest New England (JA) is celebrating financial literacy in New Haven.  This comes in partnership with Alderman Wingate, Chair of the Youth Services Committee and Tyisha Walker-Myers, President of the New Haven Board of Alders.  Being held the week of November 12th through November 16th, the schedule of events includes programs which will impact and inspire hundreds of students in elementary, middle, and high school.

The week kicks off with Junior Achievement’s 9th Annual Partners in Achievement Breakfast where over 200 guests will hear students speak about what JA means to them and how their participation has taught them how to be financially responsible and prepared for their future careers.

On November 15th, King-Robinson Inter-District Magnet School is hosting its 6th annual JA in a Day working with high school students serving as volunteers and mentors to students in first and second grade.  JROTC Cadets from James Hillhouse High School have been trained to facilitate JA’s exciting and interactive curriculum and will be working with five different classrooms.

Also occurring on November 15th is the inaugural JA Economics for Success Middle Grades Conference.  Middle school students from Bishop Woods School will spend a day in New Haven City Hall being introduced to practical information surrounding the topic of personal finance.  Students will also learn the importance of identifying education and career goals based on their skills, interests, and values.

Wrapping up the week on November 16th is a “Day in Banking” with Bank of America.  High school students from Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School and Highville Charter School will participate in an out-of-school experience as they visit the office of Bank of America in downtown New Haven.  They will hear from a panel of professionals who will talk about the variety of career paths within the banking industry.  Through hands-on activities they will also participate in two workshops led by industry leaders; How Banks Work and Using Credit Wisely.

About Junior Achievement of Southwest New England

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.  JA programs are delivered by corporate and community volunteers, and provide relevant, hands-on experiences that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.  Today, JA reaches more than 4.8 million students per year in over 100 markets across the United States, with an additional 5.2 million students served by operations in 100 other countries worldwide.

Last year in Connecticut, with the help of over 3,000 volunteers, JA of Southwest New England taught more than 45,000 local students in kindergarten through high school about business, jobs, and the importance of education for success. During the 2018-19 school year, JA expects to serve 47,000 students, the most students served in our organization’s history. Our vision is to reach 50,000 Connecticut students a year by 2020.
