JA Career Connections for Young Women-Inspiring Young Women to Plan for Successful Careers and Financial Independence

March 2017 marked the third consecutive year Junior Achievement of Southwest New England has partnered with the Junior League of Hartford to implement the highly impactful and rewarding, JA Career Connections for Young Women program.

JA Career Connections for Young Women is an intensive after-school program, bringing together a handful of high school students from the Greater Hartford area to undergo ten sessions that are aimed at providing young women with practical advice and wisdom about the world of work, from how to get hired to learning about their own personal brand.

Students hear first-hand from female professionals on how to develop valuable soft skills, gain confidence on the job, perfect their public speaking skills and the do’s and don’ts of a job interview.  They also identify a career cluster of interest and, in groups, visit a job site in that chosen field, getting an opportunity to imagine their future selves at work.   At the end of the program, students put all of what they have learned into action and practice one-on-one job interviews with hiring executives.

Here is what one student has had to share about her experience:

“Thank you so much for providing me and tens of other girls with your Career Connections program. I know that you and all of the guest speakers and volunteers put a lot of effort into making every single one of our sessions possible. Every year, you and your colleagues provide girls with knowledge and inspiration that we can use from here on out to succeed in our work, and this year is no exception. From learning the do's and don'ts in a job interview to learning to understand my personal brand, I have gained valuable knowledge that will undoubtedly be useful to me now and in my future. The Career Connections program is something that I look forward to coming to every single week. “
